Flavius Koczi led the Romanian men to victory in a quadrangular competition among Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus, held March 29 in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Romania won team competition by a small margin of 0.20 points ahead of Greece, while Bulgaria competed without four-time Olympian Jordan Jovtchev, who stayed home. All four teams used the competition as preparation for the European Championships, which will take place May 8-11 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Irodotos Georgallas of Cyprus got the highest score of the day, 16.300 on rings. His A-score was 7.1.
"I aim to raise my A-score even higher, maybe to 7.3, by the Europeans," Georgallas said. "I definitely want to make it to the rings final in Lausanne and then try for the best possible ranking."
Held at Ioannis Melissanidis Gymnastics Hall, this competition was the last full test for the Greek senior and junior male gymnasts, toward the selection of the Greek teams for the European Championships.
Some of the Greek senior men will compete at the World Cup of Cottbus, Germany, in two weeks, before the final decision about the Greek team is made.
Greece competed three teams of five gymnasts each: seniors, juniors, and a mixed senior-junior squad.
The competition was conducted in the European Championships system (three gymnasts compete on each event, and every score counts). The Greek juniors had four gymnasts on each event, with three scores counting.
Romania had an extra gymnast who performed in exhibition (non-scoring) on some events. Only two gymnasts from Cyprus competed on pommel horse.
For Greece, Hristos Lympanovnos was absent because of a minor wrist injury, but he missed the competition only as a precaution. He will be able to compete in Cottbus and be eligible for the Europeans.
2004 Olympic rings champion Dimosthenis Tambakos scored 15.600 on his best event, including an A-score of 6.8.
Vasilis Tsolakidis scored 15.200 on parallel bars, where he tested for the first time some new elements in his routine. His A-score was 6.6.
Two-time world high bar champion Vlasios Maras competed on three events only, and fell from high bar (14.50).
"I was feeling kind of tired all week," Maras said. "I guess that now comes the fatigue from all the training this season, but I will be all right very soon. I'm certain that I will be in very good shape in Lausanne."
One day earlier (March 28), Tambakos had lit the Olympic cauldron at Dion of the Pieria prefecture, as a torchbearer during the fifth day of the Beijing Olympic torch relay.
